In this article, I review the best litter pans or litter trays and I have also produced a top 10 buyer rated list of these, which you can view below. The classic “litter pan” is an affordable and basic choice for a cat litter for your home.

Litter pans have been around for a very long time. They are the open style of litter that you will find in many homes up and down the country. They are affordable and that makes them an ideal choice if you have multiple cats, or are on a tight budget.

It is worth noting that these are open pans or trays and as such do not have any type of cover. There are some basic trays, trays with high sides and also trays that fit neatly into a corner. I have included all of these different types in my list below.

As they are open it makes it faster to scoop litter. They do however need to be cleaned more regularly as everything, including any cat poop, is always on view. They are better suited to an area of the home that is quiet and out of view.

Most vets will always recommend this type of open top litter pan, rather than an enclosed box. The reason for that is that an open top litter pan helps prevent behavior issues associated with tight spaces, and also with a cat’s stronger sense of smell.

Many cats, but not all of them, simply do not like getting into a small or confined area. This behavior does vary a lot between individual cats. What is actually more important is that cats have a very sensitive and strong sense of smell.

They are also fussy creatures and simply will not go to the toilet in an area with a very strong scent. So for example in an enclosed box that has not been cleaned, the smell will be very strong and the cat will avoid that.

With an open top pan style, this is not as big a problem as there is nothing confining the smell.

Litter Pan/Tray – FAQ

In this section I always like to try and answer genuine concerns and questions from people who are considering buying a litter tray (pan). Hopefully this information can help you make up your mind if this style of litter box is really suitable for your needs.

Q. Will my cat use a litter pan?

Almost every cat will be happy to use an open top litter pan. If they have been trained from kittens then this open style id something that most cats prefer. Humans made the change to using enclosed boxes rather than cats. They did that to try and cover up unsightly poop, and also to help contain odors.

Cats however are very comfortable using an open pan style.

Q. Are litter pans suitable for disabled, elderly or very large cats?

Yes they are generally speaking. All the other types of cat litter boxes have either a flap of some kind or are top entry boxes. The top entry boxes for older cats is a major problem, and some of the side or front entry enclosed boxes can also be a problem for old or disabled cats.

These simple trays or pans are much easier for them to access.

Q. Will dogs be able to get access to cat poop?

This is a good question. This is for me the big down side with using a pan or tray style of cat litter box. Unless this type of litter box is placed in a room where the dog can’t get into, then a dog will easily be able to get at the cat poop.

The only alternative to being placed into a room is very regular cleaning, but that can be hard to do all of the time.

I have also done an article here on how to stop your dog eating cat poop, which I think is worth a read, if you are having that problem.

Buying Tips for Litter Pan Trays

Hopefully you now have enough knowledge to make the best buying decision for your own personal needs. If not, here are a few buying tips just to keep in mind, when it comes to purchasing a top entry cat litter box.

Value for Money

If you need to buy one right away, then it is just a matter of picking the one that you like and making the purchase. It is always a good idea to check on any offers that are available online, or even for things like a clearance sale in a pet store.

In my list above I have shown the prices currently available at Amazon. Generally speaking these are competitive, but they do change so always keep a close eye on those. They also have special offers that run at certain times of the year so be on the look out for those.

Remember the benefits of a Litter Pan or Tray

There are quite a few benefits of using this type of box, and I have summarised those below:

  1. They are usually the cheapest option when it comes to buying a litter box
  2. This style of tray or pan is recommended by vets as they help avoid any spacial issues that may get caused with your cat
  3. They are ideal for kittens and as a first litter
  4. The open style is also better for cats as they really do not like strong smells, which can happen with en enclosed box

Knowing you cat’s habits

Before buying a tray or pan style box, it is really good to understand your cat’s toilet habits. Some cats tend to dig a lot, some are furious diggers and some barely bother at all. For real diggers it is essential to get a tray with high sides and a high back

Some cats are also high pee-ers and for those cats high sides and back are also really important. For olders cats a low front is also important as that allows them to get inside the litter box.

In conclusion I believe that the litter pan or tray is as good as any other type and are often a better choice for anyone with an anxious or timid cat. They are certainly the most affordable option and work with any type of cat litter.
