In this article I will be reviewing the best self cleaning litter boxes that are currently available on the market place. These are slightly more expensive than your standard covered or hooded litter boxes, but the big question is, are they worth the extra money?

Personally speaking I think they are as I will go on to explain. I don’t know anyone, and I am sure you are likely to have the same thoughts, who actually likes cleaning out a cat litter box.

Let’s face it, at the end of the day it is a toilet for a cat in its most basic of terms. I know of no-one who wants to be a master pooper scooper. For most cat owners it is something they have to do, rather than want to do.

Underneath I have created a top 25 list of the best self cleaning cat litter boxes currently available on the market. These come in two types:

  1. Automatic self cleaning
  2. Manual self cleaning

As the names would suggest the automatic self cleaning litter box, does the cleaning by itself. In other words you can forget about the daily cleaning of a litter box, as this is done for you automatically.

The manual self cleaning is usually done by the cat owner having to physically rotate the box, and the litter then sifts and cleans. This can be done by either having to roll the box, or by having to shake the litter through a sift.

Both methods means that you don’t have to use a scoop to remove poop or clumps of litter. With the manual self-cleaning you do need to roll the box or sift the box on a daily basis.

I will explain in more detail down below.

If you really hate the thoughts of scooping and removing poop and clumps, then these are the way to go.

TOP 25 SELF CLEANING LITTER BOXES

Below I have done reviews on the top 25 self cleaning litter boxes, and in that I have included the buyer satisfaction rating for each product. I have placed these in order of the most popular choices first. Those that  sell the most are clearly the most popular.

They may not have the highest buyer ratings but the still sell well based on price and value for money.

No 1 – Self Cleaning – Omega Paw Self-Cleaning Litter Box

On average buyers rated this with an overall 74% buyer satisfaction rating. This box has out sold any other on this list by about three times, so that should give you an idea of its popularity. Although the rating is not as high as I would normally like to see, it is still a good rating.

This is a manual self cleaning box which simply uses a grill to clean the litter box. You simply roll this one to the right and back again and the job is done. The grill basically separates the litter from the waste. The waste then collects in a pull out tray and you then dispose of it quickly.

That is better than trying to do that with a scoop. It is a good choice if you don’t want to spend the higher amount of money on the motorized models.

This box is affordable, easy to assemble and does take the nasty work away. You can quickly daily clean the litter box in under a minute. There is also a lot less dust created by using this type of box. This is a very good choice if you have two or more cats in your home.

The draw backs are that this is still a manual process. Rather than scooping you roll the box and you still have to dispose of the waste on the tray.

No 2 – Self Cleaning – PetSafe Simply Clean Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box

On average buyers rated this with an overall 64% buyer satisfaction rating. Like the one above that is certainly lower than I would normally like to see.

However there are over 2,500 online buyer reviews, so this clearly sells really well in the market place.

This one is an automatic one so no regular manual intervention is required for this one to work. So this is the biggest selling fully automatic box.

This is only really suitable for smaller cats, and the manufacturer does state clearly, that it is suitable for cats weighing less than 15 pounds.

This is a relatively quiet bowl that constantly turns very slowly. It makes one complete turn in one hour. As this turning motion takes place the waste is sifted out and carried up a small conveyor belt into the covered, removable waste bin.

You do have to use clumping litter for this litter box to work effectively. You fill the litter box with clumping clay litter, and switch it on to get the bowl to rotate. The waste gets carried up and away by the conveyor belt and into a waste bin.

Most buyers of this use a small plastic bag as a liner inside the waste bin, which can then be tied up when close to being full and disposed of.

No 3 – Self Cleaning – Omega Paw Self-Cleaning Litter Box, Regular, Taupe

On average buyers rated this with an overall 77% buyer satisfaction rating.  That is one of the highest ratings on this list, so this one is certainly worth checking out. This is very similar to the first one on the list, but this one slightly differs in style and color.

This is not an automatic box and works by manually rolling the box. This one is pretty good at controlling dust and also pretty good at controlling odors.

This one measures 20 x 18 x 18″ and weighs 5.29 lbs. The beauty of many of these types of boxes is that they do use less litter, than a standard box.

There are over 2,000 online buyer reviews, so that does tell you that this one sells really well. This one remains a popular buy for many cat owners.

No 4 – Self Cleaning – PetSafe ScoopFree Self Cleaning Litter Box

On average buyers rated this with an overall 74% buyer satisfaction rating. Once again there are lots and lots of buyers for this unique style of automatic litter box. This one will self clean for weeks without the need to scoop, clean or to refill with litter.

The standard version of this is the tray style that self cleans, but you ca also buy this with an anti-tracking litter mat, or with a privacy hood or you can buy the tray with refills.

This one uses crystal litter which is very good at absorbing urine and also very good at dehydrating waste. That helps a lot with controlling odors. The waste in this box gets locked away in a covered trap, meaning you don’t have to clean the litter, and the waste gets covered up.

In other words you don’t have to touch this as it all happens automatically. It is the only self-cleaning litter box that uses disposable litter trays.

No 5 – Self Cleaning – Littermaid LM980 Mega Self-Cleaning Litter Box

On average buyers rated this with an overall 60% buyer satisfaction rating. This is a large litter box with high sides, and is suitable for multi-cat households and for cats over 15 lbs.

There is a removable rake and that also makes this box easy to clean.

There is a sensor on this box. This sensor must be blocked for at least 10 seconds when the cat uses the litter box. When the cat leaves the litter box, the sensor becomes unblocked. Approximately 10 minutes later, the cleaning cycle begins, and that ensures that the cat is no longer in the box.

In the cleaning cycle, the automatic rake will move forward and back to scoop waste clumps into the waste receptacle, which will then keep waste and odors contained until it is time to replace it completely.

No 6 – Self Cleaning – Omega Paw Roll n Clean Self Cleaning Litter Box

On average buyers rated this with an overall 77% buyer satisfaction rating. This is the LARGE version of the Omega Paw box that I have already described above. The reason that I include that on my list is that this one is a better choice for multiple cats and for larger cats.

Other than that it is the same box as he first one on the list. I therefore will not bore you with describing it again.

No 7 – Self Cleaning – PetSafe ScoopFree Ultra Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box

On average buyers rated this with an overall 75% buyer satisfaction rating. This box is available in two colors which are taupe and purple. This is an automatic self cleaning box, but it is certainly a very expensive option.

This one uses crystal litter which is excellent at absorbing urine, and is also exceptionally good at controlling odors. Buyers like it for this reason. This one also uses disposable trays and you can then buy refills.

There is a health counter which tracks how many times your cat uses the box. There is also a privacy hood and cats do like their privacy when doing their business. What is different about this one, is that you can set up a timer for when the automatic raking can take place.

No 8 – Self Cleaning – Omega Paw Self-Cleaning Litter Box, Large

On average buyers rated this with an overall 79% buyer satisfaction rating. This is another version of the roll and scoop type of self cleaning box. This one does look a little prettier than many others. It is very simple to use and does help keep your hands away from the nasty stuff.

Only clumping litter should be used with this one to get the full benefits of this box. It has a nice high rating and with over 1,000 online buyer reviews available, this one from Omega Paw sells really well.

No 9 – Self Cleaning – LitterMaid LM680C Automatic Self-Cleaning Classic Litter Box

On average buyers rated this with an overall 60% buyer satisfaction rating. This is a disappointing rating when compared to many others on this list. It is from a good brand and the low rating is no putting many buyers off getting this one as their preferred choice.

It is certainly different looking. It is only suitable however for smaller cats and should not be used for larger heavier cats, or for homes with more than one cat. It uses an automatic rake to do the cleaning like many of the Littermaid style do.

No 10 – Self Cleaning – Hagen CatIt SmartSift Litter Box

On average buyers rated this with an overall 58% buyer satisfaction rating. This is not a brand that I was that familiar with. There are however close to 1,000 online buyer reviews available to read. It sells well but is the lowest buyer rated one on my list.

This one cleans the litter when you manually pull a lever. Personally I have never used one like this before so I can’t really comment on how effective it is. It is a sealed box though and that should help with odor control, and also to help reduce tracking.

No 11 – Self Cleaning Litter – Robot III Open-Air – Automatic Self-Cleaning Litter Box

Litter-Robot III Open-Air

Click On Image to check the price at Amazon

On average buyers rated this with an overall 83% buyer satisfaction rating. This is the second highest rated litter box on the list, but it is also one of the most expensive.

When I say expensive, I do mean expensive as you can see just below.

This one is self cleaning and is fully automatic so clearly this will do most of the work for you.

They do offer a 90 day money back guarantee and also have an 18 month warranty on this automatic box.

There are over 500 online buyer reviews for this litter box, so clearly the high price is not putting them off, and it does get the second highest buyer rating on my list.

There is a large entrance for your cats and also contains a night light, which almost none of the other boxes do. The manufacturer also claims that if you use this model, you can save up to 50% on buying litter.

There is little doubt that this is a well made product from a very good brand, but the $400+ price point will put many people off.

No 12 – Self Cleaning Litter – LitterMaid LM580 Classic Series Automatic Self-Cleaning Litter Box

On average buyers rated this with an overall 58% buyer satisfaction rating. This particular model of litter box is very similar in style to many made by the LitterMaid brand. They are popular choices for many cat owners, though yet again this one does not get a high buyer satisfaction.

Yet again though, there are still hundreds of online reviews for this product, so people are still buying this model. Personally I don’t like the actual appearance of this type of litter, as I prefer a covered box rather than this open pan style.

No 13 – Self Cleaning Litter – Quick Clean Cat Litter Box

On average buyers rated this with an overall 57% buyer satisfaction rating. This one is from the Litter Spinner brand, and it certainly looks very different to any other box on this list. The principle behind this unique looking self cleaning box, is that you fill the bottom of it with litter, and then just spin it once to clean it.

The buyer rating is however low, and there are over 300 online reviews available. This is a manual self cleaner so you do have to spin this around yourself, and the cat waste is then placed into a drawer. It is made in the USA. You can also buy this box in a few colors which are tan, black, green, hot pink, white and royal purple.

The main complaint about this one is that it is very small and not much room inside for a cat. Opinion is very much divided on this one as some buyers hate it and some love it.

No 14 – Self Cleaning Litter – Lift n’ Sift Cat Litter Box Easy Cleaning Tray System

On average buyers rated this with an overall 66% buyer satisfaction rating. This is a litter tray system, and includes 4 trays. 2 of these trays are solid, one is a sifter tray and the 4th one is a snap on cover. The good news about this one is that it works with almost all types of litter, clumping, non-clumping and even silica gel crystals.

Many of these boxes only work with clumping litters, so at least this one offers you some choices. If sound close to 300 online buyer reviews for this one and once again buyer opinion varies quite a lot. It is one of the cheapest on my list and also one of the easiest to use.

It is a manual self cleaning one though, so you do have to do the sifting.

No 15 – Self Cleaning Litter – LitterMaid LM-86579 Multi-Cat Automatic Self-Cleaning Litter Box

LitterMaid LM-86579

Click on the Image To Find Latest Price at Amazon

On average buyers rated this with an overall 64% buyer satisfaction rating. yet another from this brand and pretty much the same style as the others from LitterMaid.

This one is the LM-86579 model, and this model is intended for use of larger cats and homes with multiple cats.

It uses the automatic raking system to keep the litter clean. There are a couple of hundred online reviews for this one and again opinion is sharply divided.

I have already explained the sensor type of operation above, and this model also uses that. It does mean that it is automatic, so no manual intervention required on your part.

The reason opinion is divided is that those who give high reviews state clearly that you must follow the instructions to the letter for this one to work properly.

You have to use a hard clumping litter, clean the pan thoroughly once a month, and put the right amount of litter in to the exact height of the fill line. If you follow these rules buyers say this one works great.

No 16 – Self Cleaning Litter – SmartScoop Automatic Self-Cleaning Litter Box

On average buyers rated this with an overall 63% buyer satisfaction rating. I do like some of the names on these boxes, and this is an interesting name for sure, from of course the SmartScoop brand. You do get the box, a 6 month supply of filters, waste bags, a litter ramp and a litter mat.

This one is expensive though, and that will put many potential buyers off this purchase.

The manufacturer claims that this one is easy to set up and also very easy to clean. You do have to use a hard clumping litter for this one to be effective. It will automatically clean the litter 15 minutes after the cat leaves the box.

Opinion again divides a lot with this one. 25% rate it very highly, 25% rate it very badly with the remaining buyers stuck somewhere in the middle.

No 17 – Self Cleaning Litter – Omega Paw Self-Cleaning Litter Box

On average buyers rated this with an overall 74% buyer satisfaction rating. This box is available either in a medium size or in a large size. This one will work with a hard clumping litter or with a silica litter.

It uses a screen to separate the waste from the clean litter. You tip it backwards and the waste and clumps get deposited into a removable tray for quick disposal.

This is not an automatic one and it needs to be rolled like most of the Omega Paw litter boxes. This one is pretty new to the market, and at the time of writing this, there were around 150 reviews that I could find. In that short time the reviews are pretty good.

No 18 – Self Cleaning Litter – Nature’s Miracle Nature’s Miracle Multi-Cat Self-Cleaning Litter Box

On average buyers rated this with an overall 66% buyer satisfaction rating. There are not a great deal of reviews to read about this one, but after some careful looking, I did manage to find around 100.

It uses carbon filters to help control odors.

When you do research you come across many of these brands and Nature’s Miracle is a popular one. Like many on this list this one gets mixed reviews. It does seem to work pretty well for larger cats or for homes with a few cats.

It does come with a limited one year warranty.

No 19 – Self Cleaning Litter – So Phresh Sifting Cat Litter Box in Grey

On average buyers rated this with an overall 80% buyer satisfaction rating. This is one of the most affordable on the list and also one with the highest buyer ratings. It is a simple system to use as it uses a simple litter tray system.

This one will work with different types of cat litter. It separates the waste in three simple and easy steps. Most buyers think that this is good value for money.

No 20 – Self Cleaning Litter – SmartScoop Basic Green Self-Scooping Cat Litter Box

On average buyers rated this with an overall 57% buyer satisfaction rating. It is an automatic box that is relatively new to the market place. This one uses carbon filters which really do a very good job at controlling odors.

Like many of these boxes this one will help cat owners avoid the daily ritual of cleaning a litter box. This one does not get a very high rating so please be aware of that. It will only work with clumping litters.

No 21 – Self Cleaning Litter – LitterMaid Classic Plus

On average buyers rated this with an overall 57% buyer satisfaction rating. This one is known as the Classic Plus from LitterMaid, and again I think this one has a very similar style to the others made by this brand.

It comes with the paw cleaning ramp, 4 extra waste receptacles and 4 extra carbon filters.

This one has been out for quite a while and is not that big of a seller. Of those who have bought it, once again there are a lot of mixed reviews.

No 22 – Self Cleaning Litter – Sifting Cat Pan Litter Box With Frame

On average buyers rated this with an overall 65% buyer satisfaction rating. This one is pretty inexpensive and is a manual tray sifting style. It is made in the USA and has a highly polished finish. The pan has been framed to help litter from spilling out of the box.

This is very much a pan style so no cover with this set of trays. As you can see it is a basic set of three pans, and one of them is used to sift the litter. It is better than having to do daily scoops, but still requires some manual work.

No 23 – Self Cleaning Litter – Le you pet semi-automatic quick cleaning cat litter box

On average buyers rated this with an overall 64% buyer satisfaction rating. Believe it or not this one is classed as a luxury toilet. It certainly has a very distinctive look to it, and nothing else is quite like it on this list. It is classed as a semi-automatic option.

It uses what is essentially a tipping bucket to do the cleaning. The interior is large enough to cater for larger cats. Some buyers seem to love this product. Those who complained said the box was low quality as the parts didn’t seem to connect well.

No 24 – Self Cleaning Litter – Lixit Animal Care Savic Toilet Home Nestor Cat Litter Box

This is the highest rated litter box on this list. On average buyers rated this with an overall 87% buyer satisfaction rating, and I couldn’t find any self cleaning box higher than this. It is also a really nice looking box and is pretty new to the market place.

As such there are not a lot of buyer reviews to go on, but so far those reviews all look very promising. I will of course keep a close eye on this one and see how it progresses in terms of ratings.

No 25 – Self Cleaning Litter – Our Pets SmartScoop Intelligent Litter Box

And finally we get to the last one on my list.On average buyers rated this with an overall 58% buyer satisfaction rating. This one uses bluetooth technology to monitor how regularly your cat uses the litter, and will let you know if that behavior becomes irregular.

It is an automatic box and it regularly cleans itself 15 minutes after the cat has left the box. It also uses carbon filters for odor control.

Tips for Buying A Self-Cleaning Litter box

I don’t know of anyone who likes to clean a litter box. It is something that you will have to do rather than want to do. If you really hate the thoughts of using a scoop to physically pick up and remove cat poop, then one of these boxes is worth considering.

It is cheaper to buy a box that you clean by rolling the box, or using a sifting pan. The automatic ones mainly use a rake to do the cleaning and are motorized. That does make your life easier, and as long as you set it up properly, they do seem to work pretty well.

I have yet to find a perfect one, but there are a few that do a good enough job. One thing became very clear when checking out the reviews, was that following the manufacturer’s instructions was a very important thing to do. That is true when it comes to the fill levels.

You should not under fill or over fill the litter.

Clumping Litter

Almost all of these recommend using clumping litter. That is because these automated boxes are designed to move solids. That of course includes poop and urine that has clumped. There are only a few that work with all types of litter, and they all work better with clumping litter.

Other Considerations

A lot of these use carbon for odor control, and that will mean you having to buy filters as and when they run out. Some of them also use liners, and if they do, you will also have to buy those. Many people do just use plastic bags for this.

Finally most of these are pan style litters, so very few of them have a hood or are enclosed. That is worth considering if your cat has been using that type of box, and you then decide to make the change.
