This is my detailed review of the cat litter box kit system from the brand Purina Tidy Cats. This is a good choice for a new starter kit for one or more cats. It is an uncomplicated system that works really well, and has been bought by hundreds of thousands of cat owners up and down the country.
For many cat owners, this is their number one choice and go to cat litter box. Generally speaking this is an affordable option, and buyers have rated their satisfaction with an overall 85% buyer satisfaction.
So given the price and the high buyer rating, this is certainly a choice worth your consideration. Let’s have a closer look at this starter kit, and see exactly what you get for your hard earned money.
The really BIG question is, “Is this the right cat litter box system for you?”
There are hundreds of cat litter boxes on the market, so why would you consider buying this one?
Why Consider the Tidy Cats Litter Box System?
If you now own a cat or cats, then you will need some type of cat litter box. You will want to be sure that the cats will use it, which may need a little training, and you will want it to control odors, and be easy to clean. That is really all that any good litter box is required for.
This litter box will certainly solve this problem for you. Cats do like this type of box and more importantly they will use this box so that is one less thing to worry about.
It is also very easy to fill with litter, and also very easy to clean the litter on a daily basis with the supplied scoop. In addition to this, it is also very easy to do a full litter change as and when you have to. The frequency that you need to do that, will depend on the litter type, but on average it is between 2-4 weeks.
Who Actually Buys This Litter Box Kit?
There are over 4,000 online buyer reviews available from a whole range of online stores. That clearly shows that this particular system is selling in its thousands. When doing my reviews though, I always like to try and understand the type of person who is making the purchase, and why they did so.
Here is what I found:
- Many cat owners bought this for their kittens
- The majority though bought it as it was dust free – important for health reasons especially if you or any of your cats have asthma or allergic conditions
- Many bought it for their younger cats that were struggling with other types of enclosed boxes
- People who owned several cats also bought this one as they found it very good for the control of odor smells
- Quite a few people bought it because compared to many other boxes, this one is well priced, and they considered it very good value for money.
How Did Buyers Rate This System?
Overall the average buyer satisfaction rating is 85% and that is very high. Buyer ratings tend to drop quite a bit when larger numbers are sold. This one has more than held its own over a very long period of time.
Around 2/3 of all buyers have actually rated this litter system kit as a full 5 star product. That is always a very good sign. At the lower end around 1 in 10 buyers gave this a bad rating, and I will explain why in the pros and cons section below.
Bad Reviews Summarized and Explained
I know from my research that 1 out of 10 buyers gave this kit a very low review. I like to dig into those to find out why, so as you get to see the full picture. Below I have listed the main reasons why they did this.
- They didn’t like the pellets that came with this litter, as some cats could chew on them
- Replacing the pads and pellets is expensive
- Some cats just will not use the litter box
- Bad at odor control
As you can imagine I have read hundreds of reviews about many types of cat litter boxes over the years. These are the same type of complaints that you get from cat owners all of the time.
The reality is that every cat is very different. Some cats will use a certain type of box and some will not. Some prefer enclosed boxes as they like privacy, others will not as they don’t like the feeling of being closed in.
This litter uses pellets rather than the clay types or the silica gel crystal types. Cats also like different types of litter and some will not like these pellets. Likewise some cats will eat their litter and some will eat pellets. If you ever find that happening, you do need to change the litter.
Some cats also have a really big tendency to play with pellets, they simply view these as toys to drag around. Again in this case you will need to change the litter.
When it comes to odor control, daily cleaning twice a day is required. That means with this system removing poop from the litter with the scoop and getting rid of it. If you don’t do that the odors quickly build up. The urine is soaked into the pads and these also need to be changed regularly.
The litter also needs to be completely changed on a regular basis.
Good Reviews Summarized & Explained
With an overall satisfaction rating of 85%, you know that the huge majority of the reviews are very good. I have summarised those below:
- The majority of buyers said there was no smell
- The majority also said this was very good at reducing the tracking of litter around the home
- The system was affordable and it meant that they could buy a couple of these
- Cat owners found that this box was easy to get in and out of for older cats
- Very quick to clean
- The majority of cats love it.
If you read any review on any cat litter tray or box, opinion is divided. Different people have different expectations about how good a product is. Ideally I want to find a box that works for my cat, and one that is easy to use and keep clean.
The majority of buyers say this does a very good job.
How Does the Purina Tidy Cats Cat Litter System Work?
This system was designed to help control odors and also to reduce the amount of litter, that cats can drag through your home.
These are of course two common problems you will have when you have a cat litter box inside your home.
This system uses pellets which will last for around a month, depending on how many cats you have. With pellets the urine passes through them and is then absorbed by pads in the bottom of the box.
When your cat does a poop it sits on top of the pellets, and needs to be removed with the scoop daily.
There is a protective drawer which holds the litter pads securely in place. You can rotate the pad tray and use the other side of the pad to get the most out of these. That hidden tray keeps the cat away from the urine pads.
It measures 20.3 x 15.2 x 11.8, and weighs 10.8 lbs.
It is a simple but very effective system as long as it is regularly maintained.
What Is In the Starter Kit?
You get the litter box. You get a bag of pellets which will last for 3-6 months depending on how many cats you have. You get a bag of pads (4 in the bag) and each pad lasts a week on average. You also get the poop scoop.
FAQ & Top Tips
When you read through the reviews, there are a number of recurring frequently asked questions, and you also find a whole range of very useful tips about a product. I have included those below:
Q. How Long Do The Pellets Last?
A. For one cat these will last for one month
Q. Can You Wash and Re-Use the Pellets?
A. Many buyers do though for some it is too much work and effort
Q. How Long Do the Pads Last?
A. For one cat these will last up to one week
Q. Can You Change the types of pellets?
A. Many do that, and a lot of cat owners use natural pine pellets. This is a good idea if you see your cat eating these pellets. Some people even use airsoft pellets which are very cheap to buy, and gentle on the paws.
The pellets that come with this are hard and they also make noise when the cat is trying to cover up their business. It is another reason why some people change the pellet type.
Some pellets as with any litter will come out of the box. Having a cat litter mat under the box really helps a lot.
If moving from a different litter box to this one, then it is a great idea to do this slowly. Keep both litter boxes in action until your cat gets used to the pellets, before removing the old litter box.
