Best Top Entry Litter Box Reviews 2018

In this article, I review the best top entry cat litter box and have also produced a top 10 buyer rated list of these, which you can view below. The "top entry" is a great choice for any home with a cat and a dog.

The reason for that is simple, in that a dog can easily get into a side or front entrance of a standard litter box, but are not so fond of going through a top entry in case they get stuck. Now I should make you aware that some dogs are persistent, and a top entry will not put them off.

In most cases though, even if they get their head in, the entrance at the top is too narrow to get their body through, and they can not reach the cat poop inside the box.

Likewise some cats will not go into a top entry box so please be aware of both of these facts. Some cats, but not that many, are just too anxious to drop down into a cat litter.

They do however work for many cat and dog owners and that is whey we have made a list of the best on the market, according to real life buyers.

Top Entry Litter Box - FAQ

In this section I always like to try and answer genuine concerns and questions from people who are considering buying a top entry litter box. Hopefully this information can help you make up your mind if this style of litter box is really suitable for your needs.

Q. Will my cat use a top entry litter box?

The very honest answer to this question is I really don't know, and I don't believe anyone else does either. I do know that if this is the only box that a cat is used to, then it will work perfectly well.

It is always harder to change from a side entry box to a top entry box, but it is possible as long as you remain patient. Believe me though making this change may require a lot of patience from you the cat owner.

Some cats change pretty quickly whereas others just take a great deal more encouragement. One good way of doing this transition is to leave the lid off at the start, and hen introduce it again when the cat has more confidence.

Q. Do top entry litter boxes topple over?

This is of course a genuine concern for many cat owners. The answer is that some of them might. In most cases this will not happen and they are safe to use. Very light boxes and very tall boxes can topple over.

For the majority of the time, if the box has litter in the bottom, then it is usually very stable. The weight of 3-4" of litter in the base combined with the weight of the box is enough to ensure it will not fall over.

The only concern then is that the box is not too light to begin with and not too tall. It does of course also depend on the size and weight of your cat.

Q. Are top entry litter boxes suitable for disabled, elderly or very large cats?

They really are not suitable for cats of this nature. As cats age they do get arthritis just like us and jumping up becomes a painful thing to do. If your cat is at a stage where it can nor comfortably climb, then I would recommend not to use a top entry litter box.

It is better to use a side entry box and you can read about those types of litter box by clicking here.

Q. Will top entry litter boxes stop dogs trying to eat cat poop?

This is a good question. I would say that for about 90% of dog owners these will do the trick. Some dogs though are brutally persistent and they are determined and even stubborn. It is extremely hard to try and stop or train a dog to stop eating cat poop.

These type of boxes though do make it harder for dogs as they usually have a round entrance that is big enough to let your cat into it, and small enough to keep your dog out. With smaller dogs this is not always possible.

This type of box is worth a try though. I have also done an article here on how to stop your dog eating cat poop, which I think is worth a read.

Buying Tips for Top Entry Boxes

Hopefully you now have enough knowledge to make the best buying decision for your own personal needs. If not, here are a few buying tips just to keep in mind, when it comes to purchasing a top entry cat litter box.

Value for Money

If you need to buy one right away, then it is just a matter of picking the one that you like and making the purchase. It is always a good idea to check on any offers that are available online, or even for things like a clearance sale in a pet store.

In my list above I have shown the prices currently available at Amazon. Generally speaking these are competitive, but they do change so always keep a close eye on those. They also have special offers that run at certain times of the year so be on the look out for those.

Changing from Side Entry to Top Entry

Most cats will make the change to a top entry box without a huge amount of effort on your part. Others may need some persuading and coaxing to get them to make the transition. You will need to be patient, but it can be done.

Remember the benefits of a Top Entry Box

There are quite a few benefits of using this type of box, and I have summarised those below:

  1. Less messy and not so much stray litter
  2. They are still covered and that helps control odors
  3. Hold plenty of litter so good for digging cats, and your cat can usually find a clean spot to do their business if you don't get a chance to clean the litter box every day
  4. Less cleaning with these according to most buyers
  5. Less noise from a scratching or digging cat
  6. To entry boxes generally speaking look better than many other types
  7. They also take up less space that a standard litter box
  8. No real need to use a litter mat
  9. The top of the box normally has a grate which helps reduce tracking
  10. Easier to move around with less risk of spilling the litter out

In conclusion I believe that the top entry style of box is as good as any other type and are often a better choice for anyone with limited space, or for anyone who also happens to own a dog.

There are plenty to pick from and most of them are affordable. Happy hunting and I truly hope that you find what you are looking for.
